Texture Pack Summary
I tried the NostalGea Texture Pack by Pathway Studios for Minecraft Bedrock, and it really brought back memories of playing old Game Boy games like Pokémon and Zelda. The pack uses a 24-color palette and retro 16x textures to give the whole world a throwback feel. The mobs, blocks, and environments are designed to look pixelated and old-school, and I could tell that a lot of the visual choices were intentional. I liked how the pack updated newer features like the trial chambers and still stayed true to its retro style. Some mobs, like the sniffer and the Warden, looked great with their bold colours and models.
But even though the theme works, this texture pack was very hard on the eyes. A lot of blocks were noisy or blurry, especially stone and underwater textures. The End dimension was the worst part for me, with a strange void that looked so bad it broke the experience (NOTE: This may have been broken in my copy or the PS version, as I was informed this is not the case in other reviews). There was no custom UI, and some mobs showed default textures because of Spring to Life update issues (The texture pack was last updated in March 2025, just before Spring To Life). I gave this pack a 5 out of 10. It does what it promises, but it is way too rough for most players to enjoy for long. If you love retro games and want something very different, it might still be worth a look.
Pros
- Strong Nostalgic Feel: The pack successfully captures the look of retro games like Pokémon Red, early Zelda, and classic Mario, using a 24-color palette and 16x textures.
- Creative Visual Design: Despite its rough style, the detailing (like starry skies, line shading, and heavy pixel work) clearly aims to replicate classic 2D graphics with intention.
- Consistent Art Style: Most blocks and mobs follow the same visual theme, which helps the pack feel cohesive and true to its retro concept.
- Updated for 1.21 Features: The pack includes newer blocks like those from trial chambers and works well in most current Minecraft Bedrock worlds.
- Great Use of Colour in Mobs: Some mob redesigns like the Warden, zombie horse, and sniffer feature creative colour palettes that stand out within the pack’s limited style.
Cons
- Extremely Harsh on the Eyes: Many textures are visually noisy or blurry, making it hard to tell blocks apart or focus during gameplay, especially in the End and Overworld stone layers.
- Broken Compatibility With Add-Ons: Mobs like chickens, pigs, and cows show default textures due to Spring to Life compatibility issues, breaking immersion.
- No Custom UI or Menus: The GUI, loading screens, and in-block UIs are untouched, which feels like a missed opportunity in a paid texture pack.
- End Void Design is Distracting: The End's black void has a bizarre and off-putting texture that the reviewer called a “deal breaker,” severely affecting overall immersion.
- Copy-Paste Armor and Weapons: Some weapons and armour sets reuse the same designs with minimal change, which reduces the sense of uniqueness and polish.
