Texture Pack Summary
In this Askew Audio Overhaul Minecraft review, I checked out the sound pack by Syclone Studios, which costs 990 Minecoins. This pack completely changes the way Minecraft sounds, giving it a funny and slightly chaotic twist. Almost every sound effect has been replaced with goofy, random, or distorted versions. Villagers now mumble in strange ways, stepping on surfaces match the sound you would expect, and even breaking blocks sounds odd. It makes normal Minecraft moments unpredictable, which can be hilarious, but also a little confusing. The idea is unique because it focuses mostly on sound, with textures being secondary, but still changed. Also, the Iron Golem is one of the most creative I've ever seen AND some villagers actually have diamond tools!
The mob sounds are where the pack really shines. Zombies groan with believability, whilst skeletons have a weird machinery sound (i'm unsure why), and animals make unexpected noises that will either make you laugh or confuse you. Even the environment feels different, with weird walking sounds, splashes, and mining effects. It is great if you want a light-hearted change from normal Minecraft audio, sprinkled in with eerie, scary or just slightly "off" sounds. However, if you are someone who relies on certain sound cues for PvP or survival, you might find it distracting or harder to play seriously.
At 990 Minecoins, the Askew: Audio Overhaul definitely proof of concept here, showing what can be done with complete audio changes. Also, hardly mentioned, is the fact that textures change with the seasons. Every 25-ish minutes, the textures will change to represent a new season (I saw what I think was Spring, flip into Autumn). Unfortunately, this isn't kept when leaving the world, as the textures reset with every log out. Still, the creativity and effort put into changing so many audio files is impressive, with some creative license used on what is mostly a vanilla pack, adapted to be 14x14.. If you are asking, “Is the Askew Audio Overhaul worth it?” I would say yes, if you are looking for something different. I gave it a 7 out of 10 for originality and creativity, and while its not something I would use, I respect the creativity and have heard amazing things from people who have played survival worlds with it.
Pros
- Very original idea - Focuses mostly on audio changes whilst also delivering texture and seasonal changes.
- Creative and Surprising sounds - Great for a change up in gameplay, with some confusion, shocks and laughter along the way.
- Large variety of changes - Many mobs, blocks, and environmental sounds are completely different, as well as a rather odd 14x14 texture design.
- High creativity - Feels unique compared to most Marketplace packs.
- Seasonal changes - Textures change with the seasons in world.
Cons
- A drastic change - Can be distracting or confusing during survival.
- Inconsistent volume levels - Some sounds are much louder or quieter than others.
- Art is subjective - Definitely one to make you think, not everyone will "get" this pack.
- Some Irrelevant Sounds - While the pack is supposed to be slightly "off" and different, some sounds just don't make sense
