Daz Man Interviews Owls Cubed!
Q1: Can you tell us a bit about your journey into Minecraft and how you became a Marketplace creator?
We’ve been playing Minecraft since the Beta days, but never really managed to create much of our own. At some point, we decided to try helping out different servers, drawing resource packs, making small models-and little by little, that grew into building maps on commission. After a while, we figured it was time to aim for the Marketplace. We gathered a portfolio of everything we had done, made a test map, and sent in an application, because we saw a chance to create something truly fun.
But things weren’t easy. We faced lots of problems, team struggles, and for a long time ended up just making texture packs. Only about six months ago did we finally form a proper team and start creating the kind of projects we had always dreamed of. Now the problem is the opposite, we’ve got too many ideas and not enough time to keep up with our own ambitions.
Q2: What inspired your latest creation on the Marketplace, and what was the creative process behind it?
Most of our recent work revolves around the Plenty of series. The idea is not to add something entirely new to Minecraft, but to expand the vanilla game with more variety. Plenty of Blocks - starting with expanding the default blocks, then expanding further. Plenty of Mobs - what we’re focused on right now, adding more life and possibilities to Minecraft’s mobs.We recently released a big update for Sit on Everything, including new sitting poses.
Our philosophy is simple: bring in all the things we’ve always wanted to see in the game, while staying close to its style and spirit. We love the vanilla feel of Minecraft, so we work hard to preserve it.
Q3: Walk us through your typical workflow when developing a Marketplace map or content pack — from idea to finished product.
Like most creators, we start by asking ourselves what we’re missing and what we’d love to see. Then we brainstorm ideas, pick the most fun ones, draft a core design doc, break it down into smaller tasks, and move into production. Our team is still very small-just a handful of friends, so progress is slow, but steady.
Q4: What tools, software, or plugins do you rely on the most, and why?
Our toolkit is minimal: Aseprite and Blockbench. That’s all we need for now.
Q5: What are the biggest challenges you face when creating for the Marketplace, and how do you overcome them?
The hardest part is figuring out how everything works. Most of our time goes into research and learning. Big teams release amazing projects that show us what’s possible, but then we have to figure out the “how,” and make it run smoothly on every device. Optimization is one of our top priorities and that’s really hard.
Q6: How do you balance creativity with the limitations and guidelines of the Minecraft Marketplace?
We just accepted the rules and try to play by them. Over time you get used to it. We understand why they’re there, and for the most part, we agree.
Q7: What’s your opinion on the current state of the Minecraft Marketplace, and how do you see it evolving over the next few years?
Honestly, we’re excited. Mojang has been rolling out new tools and possibilities at an incredible pace. It makes us much more flexible, able to create cooler projects than ever before. Learning to use all of it takes time, but it’s fun and it’s clear where we want to grow.
Q8: What’s next for you? Any upcoming releases, ideas, or collaborations we should watch out for?
We have big plans for the Plenty of series: Plenty of Mobs, Plenty of Furniture, Plenty of Tools&Weapons and more projects that we’ve already started but it’s too early to reveal. Plenty of too :)
Q9: Do you have any advice for aspiring Minecraft creators who want to get onto the Marketplace?
Do what you enjoy. Don’t chase trends or try to make something just because you think it’ll be popular. If your content is fun for you to play, chances are others will feel the same. If you’re bored with your own project, stop and ask: what can I change to make this exciting for myself? That’s the key - create something you’re genuinely passionate about.
